Joyce Portnoy leads the Athenæum’s Mystery Book Club in a discussion of Michael Connelly’s *Nightshade*. The novel follows Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Detective Stilwell, who has been sent to a quiet Catalina Island assignment after departmental politics force him away from his mainland homicide work.

Stilwell’s new post takes a darker turn when a woman’s body is discovered in the harbor, identifiable only by a purple streak in her hair. A separate poaching complaint develops into a violent investigation involving a powerful island resident and a troubling hidden history. Despite jurisdictional obstacles and opposition from a former colleague, Stilwell pursues both cases and searches for justice for the woman known as “Nightshade,” uncovering secrets beneath the island’s peaceful surface.
