Chrysanthemum Bonsai Display
Chrysanthemum Bonsai Display showcases chrysanthemum bonsai and hardy bonsai in autumn color at Longwood Gardens. The exhibition features miniature landscapes pairing tanuki bonsai chrysanthemums with suiseki viewing stones, inviting quiet contemplation and appreciation of the natural world.
Tanuki is a bonsai technique that combines living plants with weathered deadwood so they appear to form one naturally aged tree. Each tanuki chrysanthemum is paired with a Japanese suiseki, a naturally shaped viewing stone valued for suggesting landscapes. The display also highlights low-growing “gnome” chrysanthemums, whose compact size, leaves, and flowers make them well suited to bonsai. Longwood’s bonsai growers mentored staff and students in creating these plants.
