FUGS FILM!
FUGS FILM! makes its Philadelphia premiere at PhilaMOCA. This music documentary revisits The Fugs, the downtown New York band that combined poetry, rock and roll, folk music, and punk sensibilities during the radical 1960s. The film explores the group’s influence, unconventional artistic identity, anti-authoritarian activism, opposition to censorship, and protests against the Vietnam War, including its 1967 “levitation” of the Pentagon.
The documentary features interviews with Fugs frontman Ed Sanders and drummer Ken Weaver, along with Aline and R. Crumb, Lenny Kaye of the Patti Smith Group, Chris Stein of Blondie, and other underground figures. It presents The Fugs as an underrecognized counterpart to The Velvet Underground and as a band whose political and musical boundary-pushing helped shape later rock culture.
