The Longest Johns
The Longest Johns bring their lively, harmony-centered take on maritime folk music to The Colonial Theatre. Formed in Bristol in 2012, the group blends traditional sea shanties and work songs with original songwriting, folk-rock energy, humor, and a distinctly modern digital presence.
The band gained worldwide attention after their version of “Wellerman” went viral on TikTok in 2021, helping fuel the global “ShantyTok” revival. Their music balances historical preservation with reinvention, from the eight-part *Pieces of Eight* release project to the fan-funded 2024 album *Voyage*, which was accompanied by a book of stories, artwork, and lyrics and has surpassed 7 million Spotify streams. Their newer album, *Ends of the Earth*, explores subjects ranging from eighteenth-century crime to wilderness legends while expanding the group’s vocal sound.
