Vince Staples: Cry Baby Tour
Vince Staples brings the Cry Baby Tour to Franklin Music Hall with support from Private School. The performance centers on Staples’ album *Dark Times*, a reflective and sonically expansive work that combines dense lyricism, layered production, dark humor, melancholy, and flashes of hope.
The album is presented as a snapshot of Staples’ life after a decade of releasing music. Recorded during a seven-month period in North Hollywood while he was also completing his Netflix series, *The Vince Staples Show*, the project reflects his preference for a focused, largely solitary creative process. Its 13 tracks do not feature other musicians, although samples, studio appearances, and a spoken outro from Santigold contribute to the album’s narrative.
Songs such as “Shame on the Devil,” “Government Cheese,” “Étouffée,” “Little Homies,” and “Freeman” explore musical growth, loneliness, grief, family roots, resilience, ambition, and the uncertainty of life. The record also incorporates a 1973 conversation between Nikki Giovanni and James Baldwin, underscoring its themes of Black love, care, and respect.
