Falling Leaves
Falling Leaves is a newly restored landmark of Georgian cinema and the debut feature of director Otar Iosseliani. Winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1968 Cannes Film Festival, the film blends poetic moments with an observational portrait of life on the streets of Tbilisi.
The story follows Niko, a young graduate of winemaking school who begins working at an agricultural cooperative. As he adjusts to the routines and compromises of adult life, Niko falls for a coworker and discovers an attempt to conceal a defective batch of wine. He must choose between defending his principles and giving in to the pressures around him. The film stars Ramaz Giorgobiani and serves as both a satire of institutional conformity and a warm portrait of youthful idealism.
